Ill-borne creature

In an imposing list of Renaissance English writers Walter Raleigh occupies a specific niche of his own. He did not leave a literary heritage comparable with that of Christopher Marlowe or Philip Sidney, to say nothing of Shakespeare. Nor he excelled in poetic metre and phrase like Edmund Spenser. Yet he comprised a lot of values which made him a notable soldier, courtier, navigator, explorer, adventurer, and more!

Little is known about Raleigh's birth or childhood, not even the year when he was born; according to different sources, that was 1552 or 1554. All sources start his biography with youth, when he attended Oxford, fought with the Huguenots in France and studied law in London. In 1578 Raleigh sailed to America with his half brother Sir Humphrey Gilbert, who obtained a patent for six years authorizing him to take possession of "any remote barbarous and heathen lands not possessed by any Christian prince or people." They planned to found a colony there but this expedition was unsuccessful as they lost a ship, Gilbert was impoverished by his ventures, and Ralegh had to seek his fortune about the court.
In 1580 he was twice arrested for duels and first came to the attention of Elizabeth I, when he went to Ireland to help suppress a rebellion in Munster. As the old story says, he threw his mantle on the ground to help the queen to walk dry-shod over a puddle, and scribbled verses with a diamond on a pane of glass to attract her attention.

These might be gossip, but it is certain that his tall and handsome appearance, his caressing manners and quick wit pleased the Queen. He soon became her favourite, and the rewards showered on him were out of all proportion: he received extensive estates in Ireland, was knighted and appointed captain of the Queen's Guard.

In 1585, he sponsored the first English colony in America on Roanoke Island (now North Carolina). The colony failed, but Raleigh brought potatoes and tobacco to Britain. Although both of these were already known via the Spanish, Raleigh did help to make smoking popular at court and Queen Elizabeth said: “I have often seen how money turned into smoke. You’re the first who turned money into smoke”.
In 1592 he was again at sea with an expedition, when he was recalled by the queen. The cause of it was the discovery of Raleigh's secret marriage to one of her maids of honour, Elizabeth Throgmorton. This threw the queen into a jealous rage. However hard had Ralegh denied it both he and his wife were imprisoned in the Tower, and if he was not already married was married there. On his release, in an attempt to find favour with the queen, he set off on an unsuccessful expedition to find El Dorado, the fabled “Golden Land”, rumoured to be situated somewhere on the Orinoco river in Guiana (now Venezuela). His account of the voyage, The Discoverie of Guiana, published on his return, is the most brilliant of all the Elizabethan narratives of adventure.

The death of the queen and the accession of James I were ruinous to Ralegh. He was dismissed from the captaincy of the Guard, deprived of his monopolies, and in 1603 accused of plotting against the king. His trial at Winchester was conducted with outrageous unfairness, and his composure turned public opinion in his favour. It is now impossible to reach the truth, but it appears probable that Ralegh was aware of the conspiracies, though the evidence against him was insufficient to prove his guilt. He was sentenced to death which was reduced to life imprisonment and Raleigh spent the next 12 years in the Tower of London, where he wrote his “History of the World”.
In 1616, Raleigh was released to lead a second expedition to search for El Dorado. The expedition was a failure, and Raleigh also defied the king's instructions by attacking the Spanish. On his return to England, the death sentence was reinstated and Raleigh's execution took place on 29 October 1618. He died with serenity and dignity. The day before, Raleigh wrote a letter to one of his friends, inviting him to his execution. He advised the friend to come early to take a better place, as it was going to be crowded. "As for me, I have already secured a place." He mounted the scaffold with calm and laid his head on the block. When the executioner demanded that he turned his face to the east, Raleigh pronounced: “It doesn’t matter where the head is. What does matter is where your heart is”.

The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner на музыку.

Nursery rhymes?

Three blind mice, three blind mice,
See how they run, see how they run,
They all ran after the farmer's wife,
Who cut off their tails with a carving knife,
Did you ever see such a thing in your life,
As three blind mice?

Mary, Mary quite contrary,
How does your garden grow?
With silver bells and cockle shells
And pretty maids all in a row.

Something to enjoy in the rain

Is there anything special you love doing in the rain? Oh, I know, I used to hear it pretty often: “What are you talking about? I love sunshine! I hate rain and whatever associated with it”. Yet, some things seem more fascinating when it’s raining, don’t you think? Like wrapping yourself in a rug with a book by your favourite author, (and, as a delightful supplement, tea and chocolates within your reach).
And what I really adore on a rainy day is hanging about a good bookstore. There is one in Saint Petersburg, Dom Knigi in Singer House, a heavenly place for book lovers. This is one of the most beautiful buildings on the corner of Nevsky Prospekt and Griboedov Channel.

They’ve got a tremendous selection of books, and also benches and chairs for visitors, very comfortable, you know. More than that, you’re free to have coffee in the café on the second floor without parting with a book. That is the best part of it: savouring a book with a view of Kazan Cathedral and an éclair. Once I spent in the café two hours or so with a book of Brodsky’s interviews and “Coco Chanel Secrète” by Marcel Наеdrich, and then bought both of them, unable to part with such absorbing reading.
And in any city, bookstores attract me as honey draws Winnie-The-Pooh. When we were planning the itinerary In Portugal I insisted on including Porto because of Livraria Lello. I’d seen pictures online and was completely mesmerized by its incredible wooden panels, ornate painted plaster and carved staircase.

Believe it or not, but we went there on a really rainy day. Outside it was not much, we actually went past. A narrow building in neo-Gothic style, squeezed in between the others.

But the inside was really beautiful, an amazing intricate design, stained-glass window, so different from usual boring store interior.

Yet, the choice of English books was limited to a few dozen; they were beautifully printed gift editions with gilt edges, but too few! The coffee shop turned to be a couple of chairs, besides, it was rather small and dark inside, probably due to the weather. And there was an official repeating annoyingly at regular intervals: “No photos, please!”

All in all the real Livraria Lello seemed to me not as impressive as in the pictures. Might it be a grey rainy day that made it look like that? You can say I’m contradicting myself, but “I hope you will allow me the pleasure of being inconsistent” (Oscar Wilde, not me)! And I still love rain and bookstores. I wish there were good ones in our town…

Her Splendor Autumn

 Any autumn lines to share?

5 reasons to choose the University of Coimbra

Actually, all the reasons are of personal character, they explain why I would like to study (or rather, work) at Coimbra University.
Number 1: Location. The university is situated in a fascinating old city, a former capital of Portugal.

Coimbra is fairly called a cidade dos estudantes /the city of students. Actually, the city life, most social and cultural events centre round the University. Judge for yourselves: the most famous park in the city is the Botanic Garden of the University of Coimbra (the fifth oldest in the world, by the way). The main football team was founded by the University of Coimbra students' union in 1872. Two major city festivals – the Latada and Queima das Fitas / the Burning of the Ribbons – define the academic year. The Latada occurs at the beginning of the year and is a welcome to the new university students. On this day freshmen, wearing fancy costumes and tin cans tied to their legs, march through the streets and then are "baptized" in the Mondego River thus entering into the Coimbra academic fraternity.

Number 2: Age. The University of Coimbra is one of the oldest academic institutions in the world, its history dating back to 1290. And what is associated with the age of the University? – Tremendous old buildings, multiple traditions, first class reputation, and, as a matter of course, highest educational standards. Speaking of traditions, for our students it is not easy to imagine a university with its own church, right? The bell tower of São Miguel Chapel is the university symbol which can be seen from any part of the city. And one of its bells, the Cabra (She-goat), used to call students to the lectures. Lovely tradition, don't you think? However, once students, fed up with strict academic rules, dared steal the Cabra. There was a big scandal, but the bell was never restored. It was changed and the new Cabra nowadays rings only for masses.

Number 3: Modernity. Despite its seven hundred years history, the University of Coimbra is open to innovations and tends to globalization. A few years ago they adopted the Bologna Process model and became a multicultural academic community. Students from all over the globe take full and part time courses in various subjects at 8 faculties. Together with reputable Classical Languages, Anthropology, and Pharmaceutical Sciences they offer academic degrees in Design and Multimedia, International Relations, Environmental Engineering and other state-of-the-art subjects.

Number 4 (which is actually, number 1 and the reason enough for me): the LIBRARY. When I entered Biblioteca Joanina I thought: It is my dream job! There’s nothing more tempting than to belong to this intellectual luxury, to be able to touch manuscripts of the XVI century, to learn from these ancient books.

I asked if students are allowed to take books here, about the procedure and suchlike and was astonished to hear that all those treasures can be borrowed!
The modern part of the library looks different, though the old ceiling has been preserved.

There was a sign Prison entrance (funny, isn’t it, inside a library) and I asked a working assistant, who appeared to be an applicant, who the prisoners were and for what sins they were taken into custody. For stealing books (!!!), drinking, non-obedience, misdemeanor of the sort. And if they cheated in the exams? I’m not sure, - was the reply.
And finally, Number 5: Opportunities. In all aspects and meanings of the word! Coimbra is in central Portugal, and Portugal is located close to Spain, Morocco and other wonderful countries. You learn Português and, probably, more languages communicating with students of different nationalities. The tuition fee, by the way, is not monstrous – about 900 euros per year.

Would you like to study at a University of the kind? Which of my arguments do not sound weighty to you?

Reading & Travelling

click on the picture for a closer view
