Читать Шекспира сегодня? Зачем?

Слово "гений" само по себе служит исчерпывающей характеристикой и в дополнительных эпитетах не нуждается. Но когда речь заходит о Шекспире, этого оказывается мало, и "гений" сопровождается определениями – и чьими! "Многосторонний", – говорит о творце "Гамлета" Пушкин, "необъемлемый", – уточняет Лермонтов, "мирообъемлющий", – утверждает Белинский.
23 апреля – день Вселенной по имени ШЕКСПИР. 23 апреля 1564 – день его рождения. По мистическому совпадению, он скончался в этот же день, спустя 52 года, в родном Стрэтфорде-на-Эйвоне. В этот же день, в 1597 году, состоялась премьера его комедии "Виндзорские проказницы", на которой присутствовала английская королева Елизавета I. А 23 апреля 1932 в Стрэтфорде-на-Эйвоне был открыт Королевский шекспировский театр, который с тех пор проводит в эти апрельские дни шекспировские фестивали.
    Пару лет назад, когда я писала статью “Шекспир глазами студентов XXI века”, предложила тогдашним и бывшим своим студентам анкету. Опуская подробности, скажу лишь, что подавляющее большинство тогда проголосовало за Шекспира.
Для меня вопрос, стоит ли читать Шекспира, решился как-то сам собой. Я читаю его давно и постоянно. Почему? Готова ответить, но сначала предоставляю слово вам.

Eats, shoots, and leaves.

A panda walks into a café. He orders a sandwich, eats it, then draws a gun and fires two shots in the air. 'Why?' asks the confused waiter, as the panda makes towards the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder.

'Well, I'm a panda,' he says, at the door. 'Look it up.'

The waiter turns to the relevant entry in the manual and, sure enough, finds an explanation. 'Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots, and leaves’.

     

The final phrase in the story made the title for Lynne Truss’s amazing book "Eats, Shoots and Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation". What can be amazing about a non-fiction book on punctuation, you’ll ask? Well, it’s witty in practically every page, in some places screamingly funny! The punctuation marks are made alive, each with its own character, such as here: “Meanwhile, the illiterate default punctuation mark is nowadays the comma, which gives even more cause for alarm”. And the author illustrates it with this:

“The tap water is safe to drink in tea and coffee, however, we recommend using bottled water for drinking, it can be purchased very cheaply in the nearby shops”. Do you see what’s wrong with it?

The descriptions of most ordinary subjects are sparkling: “In the family of punctuation, where the full stop is daddy and the comma is mummy, and the semicolon quietly practices the piano with crossed hands, the exclamation mark is the big attention-deficit brother who gets over-excited and breaks things and laughs too loudly.”

Truss proves by dozens of vivid examples, both popular and unknown, that punctuation is not an issue solely reserved for the elite educated classes:

"woman, without her man, is nothing" and "woman: without her, man is nothing".

9 апреля 1966 года Ватикан отменил просуществовавший более четырех веков Индекс запрещенных книг. В список публикаций, которые были запрещены Римско-католической церковью, в свое время входили сочинения Эразма Роттердамского, Даниэля Дефо, Лоренса Стерна, Николая Коперника и др. Список включал книги, поучающие или рекомендующие любые суеверия, колдовство, магию и тому подобное; книги, провозглашающие законными самоубийство, развод и пр. Между тем, книга Адольфа Гитлера "Mein Kampf" никогда не входила в индекс. Книги же, прошедшие цензуру, публиковались с грифом Nihil obstat ("ничего запретного") или Imprimatur ("да будет напечатано") на титульном листе.

В советской России цензура была весьма жесткой, чего нельзя сказать о сегодняшней литературе. Несомненно, что само понятие цензуры противоречит свободному выбору. Но, когда в книжных магазинах видишь немыслимое количество макулатуры, выдаваемой за литературу, хочется, чтобы существовал некий верховный судья, который бы все-таки отсекал откровенный хлам. Или же прав Оскар Уайльд, утверждавший, что “литературный вкус дается от природы” и “на Парнас нет путеводителя”?

Books from Childhood

 April 2 is the holiday of Alice, Winnie the Pooh, Mary Poppins, Karlson, The Little Prince, Neznaika and all the personages we loved when we were kids. Since 1967, Hans Christian Andersen's birthday has become International Children's Book Day. It is celebrated to inspire love for reading and to call attention to children's books.

If you ask me about my favourite children’s book, I'm not sure I can single out one. All those above and also Deniska from Dragunski’s stories, Chipolino, Pippi Longstocking and many many more! Fairy tales as well – Russian, Persian, Chinese, Georgian, of any nationality, I loved them! 
These books took me away to another reality where I played together with Pippi Longstocking, Tommy and Anika, or made a boat with Robinson Crusoe, or laughed at Lord Tomato with Chipolino and other fellow vegetable townfolk, and was happy. A unique warm cuddling feeling you enjoy when you’re a child!
