Non-fiction, mostly. Artists’ biographies, history of painting – we’re winding up the topic Painting. And sometimes you come across amazing facts. Look!
Claude Monet’s seascape “Impression, Sunrise” outraged critic Louis Leroy so much that he titled his hostile review of the show "The Exhibition of the Impressionists", thus inadvertently naming the new art movement. This is what he wrote about the painting: Wallpaper in its embryonic state is more finished than that seascape. ??!! It’s next to impossible to believe how blind can be experts, critics and reputable masters. What do you think of it?
I know the standards of beauty were different at that time. Still, isn’t it beautiful? Regardless of artistic trends or period. I'm just wondering…

That was just NEW, WEIRD for the stuff who got used to Classicism. They might argue both the colors and the technique but the LIGHT is no doubt, unique, bewitching, stunning...

ОтветитьУдалитьI like the Impressionists. You can spend hours looking at their pictures and still find something new. Their works are full of light, I mean, not only light rendered by some painting technics, but inner light. So my key words for impressionists: immense talent, unique, light, chick, emotions, progressive.
ОтветитьУдалитьI can't say I have a good knowledge of art, but this work is really amazing. Large paint brushes, fuzzy lines, the illusion of movement which make the painting very realistic.
ОтветитьУдалитьINCREDIBLE!
ОтветитьУдалитьI think the reaction of the critic was rather expectable as it's natural of people to reject what they are unable to understand. Instead of sparing some efforts to make it more comprehensible for themselves they just call the painting "a colourless daub of paint" and consider the artist to be insane. As for me, I definitely like it (for one thing, I'm extremely fond of seascapes). Due to the colouring the factories in the background are scarcely discernible as if the life of a big industrious city were of minor importance, it can wait. The real life is in the sky, in the sun reflected in the water, in the sea dappled with highlights. I wish I had the same reproduction hanging in my room, because it brings such a relief to my eyes to look at it.
ОтветитьУдалитьOn the whole I like impressionism, but this concrete painting didn't impressed me a lot. Just a little pretty thing! As for me, I prefer more subtle colours, sharply defined details. There are a lot works of different impressionists, which in my opinion, are worth seeing.
ОтветитьУдалитьThanks for frank opinion, I appreciate it. What puzzled me is your remark about "subtle colours". If these are not subtle, I probably don't understand what subtle means....
УдалитьLooking at this painting...oh, sorry, the reproduction of the painting I got struck. I'll explain why. This sun. I can't say anything but "wow!" You know, in autumn I often see just the same sun in the window. It's amazing! I won't dwell on the painter's brushwork, composition and so on. It's not even important. What seems really incredible for me is the skill of the artist who managed, in spite of the lines being scarcely discernible, to create a true-to-life landscape. It seems to be so real, so inviting (if I may put it in that way), that I almost see the boat sliding on the surface of the water and hear the man sculling. The colour scheme is great. Almost all the shades and tones of water existing in nature.

As for my first impression...I couldn`t stop looking at the painting, it`s so relaxing. The artist managed to represent peacefulness and coolness of the morning. It seems to me that the world just started to awaken. The objects are in the morning mist and they are scarcely discernible. Cool and restful colours help to feel the silent and calmness of the atmosphere.I like it very much. Julia K
ОтветитьУдалитьLooking at this seascape i feel calm, because i can look at the sea for hours. The sky and the sea merged into a single entity and it brings me the feeling of infinity (as for me, the sea is a symbol of infinity)... Using bold brushworks the artist rendered the movement of the sea, with all its colours and shades. The painting conveyed a sense of space. So i feel as if i were looking at the sea standing on the shore. And what about the sun... It is like a certain thing, which you can discern in that infinity.

I can’t say that this picture impressed me very much. I have a strange feeling, that this painting is like a weeping mirror, which needs wiping. The painting is lack of something, may be colours, may be accentuating some details, and for me it seems rather dull and obscure . But speaking about the Monet’s creative work on the whole I dare say he’s a genius. He was not specialized in only one genre of painting, he painted scenes of common life, people as well buildings and nature.

Before starting to comment this upon, I've been looking at this picture for about 30 minutes and I think that, obviously, there is something catching in it. Someone can find there a movement, a beautiful colour-scheme, eternity, lightness and what not. As for me, I don't see any movement in it, on the contrary, Monet managed to capture the moment of stillness, the moment of calmness, he managed to render the impression of the silent immobility. The most important thing in the painting is the sun, that seems to be an eye of a deity that looks at you very attentively. It's always very interesting to find a picture inside the picture, to see something what you were unable to see before. That's why you should always think twice before starting to criticize because the first impression is deceitful. Vladimir, 301e
ОтветитьУдалитьI guess there’s some magic in that Monet if you took a really good look at it. I guess you were spellbound by this tranquility and saw what “you were unable to see before”. I mean more than this only seascape. Find time to watch Van Gogh with Paola Volkova in Utrata, a new world will open up its charming mysteries for you.
УдалитьI think the title of this picture corresponds to what the artist painted. You see, all the colors used in “Impression, Sunrise” are dim and subdued, and it gives the impression of the beginnig of the day. Besides, the careless strokes of the paint-brush and the silhouettes of the outgoing boats let me think about the depth of the sea...In my opinion, Leroy underestimated this picture.
