What am I reading now? Are you kidding?

HELP! My precious students have buried me under papers. Struggling with a desire to make a fire out of their course and diploma papers (and rephrasing Oscar Wilde, the best way to resist the temptation is to yield to it), I took a break to dream of what books I’ll devour in summer. It will come some day, it should!
So, №1 is Joanne Harris’s Blueeyedboy, which I haven’t got to yet. In case you forgot, Joanne Harris is the author of delicious Chocolat and Blackberry Wine, books you sample and savour like rare wine. Then something by Anna Gavalda in English translation, if she doesn’t publish a new one by that time. Would you recommend anything else? To forget classes and relax? No cheap love stories or fantasy, br-r-r!

  1. One of the authors on my list for summer is Julian Barnes. Cynical sometimes, but penetrating. His new collection of stories Pulse is already published, and a new novel The Sense of an Ending is coming in August. I hope, it’s of any help)))

  2. Thank you, Natash, I'll keep it in mind. The more so because there're few advisors. :)

  3. "Crime and Punishment" in English... Brought it from US like 5 or 6 years ago but still can't bring myself to it... :)

  4. I don't know if Cecelia Ahern is a cheap love stories writer or not, but I like her books."The gift", "Love,Rosie" and some others. Besides when I feel that summer's coming, I start thinking about new places I want to visit and read guidebooks with lots of beautiful photos. Prefer Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Travel Guides. Interesting facts, interesting places, practical advices. "Beijing & Shanghai", "Japan" are among my favorite.

  6. No, Cecelia Ahern is quite a good writer, as well as Meg Cabot, for instance. There’s a distinct novelty in their style, I think, both sound fresh and original. Last year I had a diploma on their books, you can have a look (Robinsonovich). http://bgpu.ru/site/content/kafs/engphil/kovalenko/EnglishLiterature/Studentspresentations.htm#reason
“Cheap” is probably the wrong word I used. I meant something you enjoy reading, or at least, you can digest without disgust. Once I took a Sophie Kinsella’s book from Shopaholic series for vacation. That was something I was unable to swallow. ))

  7. The topic of my Chinese course this semester is free time and the ways you spend it. I remember my classmates grumbling about their course and diploma work, because it takes the whole weekend to write it and correct the mistakes. Actually, I can call my diploma work the way of spending my free time. (Can’t say that about the course work, that was rather a challenge to me) Anyway, philology seems more or less my cup of tea, first of all because of reading. Right now I’m actually savoring Blueeyedboy! (Thanks for that wonderful theme of my diploma work!) Saying nothing of Bridget Johns, who just became my friend for this autumn. Anyway, speaking about my reading wishes for summer I can’t resist The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. Just EL OU VE her works.

  8. Can’t wait to hear your impressions of “Blueeyedboy”! The verb you’ve used about it is somewhat unexpected. Some people who read the book choked down, you know…
Why choose read for summer NOW?? Summer is miiiiiiiles away! Oh, I think, I grasped your point. You’ll be busy with your diploma these miles!
